Current Research Project:

Since the 1970s new conflicts had developed along the controversial fields of genetic engineering, reproductive medicine and embryo research. The Federal Republic of Germany reacted in the early 1980s by appointing bioethics commissions to debate the chances and dangers of the new possibilities of science and technology. The project analyses discussions between politicians, physicians, biologists, theologians and other actors as multi-layered relationships of coopertaion and competition. On the one hand the aim of these commissions was to contribute contributing to social and political consensus regarding regulation of the life sciences; on the other hand they competed for interpretative authority regarding knowledge about present and prospective developments in biotechnology.
